YOGYA

Yogya, short for Yogyakarta, indeed has an interesting origin and profound meaning. Yogyakarta comes from two Sanskrit words, namely “Ayogya” or “Ayodhya” and “Karta”.

Ayogya or Ayodhya: Ayogya can be interpreted as “peace” or “without war”.
In this context, the prefix “A” means “not” or “without”, and “yogya” refers to “yodya” or “yudha”, which means “war”. So, “Ayogya” depicts a place of peace, free from conflict or war.

Karta; means “good” or “complete”. So, adding “Karta” at the end of the word reflects the hope or desire for goodness and completeness within that place.
So, overall, Yogyakarta can be interpreted as “A Peaceful and Good Place” or “A Place Without War that is Good”. This name reflects the values of peace and goodness that are part of the character and identity of this city.

Yogya City has a rich cultural, historical, and spiritual significance, often considered as the cultural and educational center of Indonesia. It is not an exaggeration to interpret Yogyakarta (Yogya) as ‘a city worthy and fitting to inhabit and visit’.
